What to Eat and Drink Before Drinking Alcohol

Why an empty stomach changes how fast alcohol hits — and simple meals that make a good base for a night out.

Why eating before drinking matters

Most alcohol is absorbed in the small intestine. Food keeps it in your stomach longer, so alcohol enters your blood more slowly and usually peaks lower. On an empty stomach, the same drinks hit faster and harder.

Foods that work well

Protein-rich foods

Eggs, chicken, fish, beans, Greek yogurt and tofu digest slowly and keep you full.

Carbohydrates

Whole grains, rice, pasta, potatoes and oats provide steady energy and help slow absorption.

Healthy fats

Avocado, nuts, olive oil and salmon also slow stomach emptying.

Good meals before drinking

  • Eggs + whole-grain toast
  • Rice + chicken + vegetables
  • Pasta + a protein like tuna, chicken or lentils
  • Oatmeal + yogurt + fruit
  • Salmon + potatoes + salad
  • Burrito bowl with beans, rice and avocado

What to drink before alcohol

Start the evening well hydrated. A glass or two of water beforehand — and water between drinks — keeps the pace down and helps the next morning.

What to eat while drinking

Keep snacking: nuts, cheese, hummus with bread or a proper late dinner all help. A long evening on a single early meal isn't much better than an empty stomach.

Less useful choices

  • Salty crisps and snacks make you thirsty — often for another drink
  • Sugary snacks alone give a quick spike without much staying power
  • Skipping dinner "to save room" — the worst option of all

Food doesn't prevent intoxication

Food slows alcohol down, but all of it still reaches your blood eventually. You can still get drunk after a big meal. Read more about what affects BAC.

Eating won't make it safe to drive

A full stomach doesn't make driving after drinking safe or legal. Only time lowers BAC — and if there is any doubt, don't drive.
